D1: Path Lab Bulletin

Pcr.ai is a machine learning system used at KCH that enables high throughput COVID-19 PCR interpretation, monitoring and reporting which is essential for high volumes of data. In under three minutes, results from the thermocycler are available for the patient. Patented AI ensures accuracy of results and standardisation ensures results from different equipment and labs can be compared - all in real-time. Complete QC monitoring further ensures reliability of results. These will then be sent to the individual and there will be an opportunity for anyone with a positive result to have a discussion with a health care professional. We intend to start with a pilot programme involving care homes and build on that by working with GP practices to contact their cohort of patients and then deliver and collect swab kits by postcode.

Pcr.ai has been validated by a laboratory based in Glasgow and the results were published in Journal of Clinical Virology - https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jcv.2019.08.005 . They concluded that ‘...PCR.Ai (from diagnostics.ai) is a highly accurate time-saving tool that reduces complexity of PCR analysis and hence the need for specialists and hands-on time. It demonstrated capabilities to enable us to get results out more quickly with lower costs and less risk of errors.’

The service at KCH is already set up and running including swabs and pcr.ai for routine testing.
