Reprocess used Negative Swabs Swabs

A: Not for current challenges

If a swab proves negative for Covid 19 use it again.

Could be sterilised by irradiation or some other method.

I don't know if this could be extended to all swabs obviously you need to get rid of any RNA but that wont be on the negative ones.

Have you validated this method, if so, how and what were the results of the validation?

No - Just an Idea, I don't know enough about the swab use and testing.

How quickly could this be deployed and what are the dependencies?

In the time it takes to organise collection and sterilisation. If irradiation were to be used there are no material requirements.

What is the likely production volume?

At the present level approximately 3 in 4 swabs are negative.

What are the risks and barriers to using this at scale?

Unknown

Who are you already partnering with on this?

No-one

Thank you for this helpful idea Anthony - we will continue to consider whether this may be a sensible course of action to manage the use of swabs. As I cannot specifically see this being progressed or studied I will close the idea shortly but if we could find a reasonable way to factor in the idea we will let you know.

Thanks and kind regards,
Tom

Thanks for sharing this Anthony, we appreciate you putting forward this idea. I had shared this idea with the swabs commercial team in the Testing Programme. Unfortunately from a practical point of view they have said they cannot reuse negative swabs as the swabs need to break when transported and so are shorter in length following use, meaning they are no longer long enough to be used again.

Again we appreciate you sharing this and hope you have found it beneficial to use the platform.

Kind regards,

Tom
