The use of the compact Mic qPCR cycler for rapid deployment by Mike Slinger @ BMS

D3: Catalogue of Resources
The use of the compact Mic qPCR cycler for rapid deployment of remote Covid-19 diagnostic testing. This plug-and-play 48-sample real time RT-PCR platform is extremely compact at 15 cm cubed, robust for transport, and never requires calibration. It is in use within NHS laboratories, and also around the world in remote locations in disaster relief efforts. It outperforms traditional "gold standard" PCR systems whilst costing under £10,000.

The Mic is compatible with nearly all manufacturers' qPCR-based Covid-19 test kits, some of which have been specifically validated on the Mic by their manufacturer. Many NHS laboratories using other tests on Mic have performed this validation themselves before commencing live testing.

The system is part of a widely used workflow comprising four elements (RNA extraction from swab, manual or automated pipetting, Covid-19 test kit, and qPCR platform) - therefore it could be deployed immediately.

It requires an extracted RNA sample and a qPCR kit reagent to be pipetted into a tube, capped, and placed inside the machine. Whilst this may not be feasible for bedside testing, it is ideal for deployment to small hospitals without current molecular capability.

Operators need to be adequately trained to ensure pipetting is accurate and free of contamination. We offer full remote traning on use of the equipment and work closely with providers of the other elements of the workflow to make this seamless.

If required, we offer a second system called Myra - designed to automate pipetting (liquid handling) whilst remaining compact at 36cm wide and affordable at £19,500.
