Fingerstick blood collection and preservation

A: Not for current challenges

6 drops of blood are collected in the Hem-Col tube. In the tube a preservation fluid preserves the blood for upto 5 days. Blood can be send by regular postal services to the lab. In the lab the blood can be analysed on the usual clinical chemistry, immunchemistry and hematology analysers. By measuring an internal standard the results can be corrected for dilution by the preservation fluid. 

Have you validated this method, if so, how and what were the results of the validation?​

Validation is performed by collection blood via phlebotomy with a vacuumtube and collecting blood via a fingerstick in the Hem-Col tube. The venapuncture blood was analysed within 2 hours wherease the Hem-Col tube was first posted by regular postal services to the lab and analyed after 120h. The testresults in both samples were compared by regression analysis. The regression analysis of the most common parameters can be found on https://labonovum.nl/en/healthcare-professionals/

At this moment it is possible to measure up to 20 clinical chemistry parameters or a complete bloodcount or infectionserology in one tube. 

Recently Labonovum has validated corona serology testing in the Hem-Col No-Additive tube. A few drop blood collected at the kitchen table are send to the lab. Within 4 weeks more than 5000 consumers were tested on COVID19 serology. 

How quickly could this be deployed and what are the dependencies?​

In September 2020 a productionfacility will be in place to produce at least 10.000 tubes a day. 

What is the likely production volume?​

Starting with 10.000 tubes a day and within 6 months a scale up to 100.000 tubes a day. 

What are the risks and barriers to using this at scale?​

none

How does this fit into a tracked sample pathway?

Labonovum has developed an online instruction and registration module for blood collection at home: PostYourLab. Each tube has an unique barcode and serial number that can be registred in the PostYourLab module.

Hello Dennis,

Thanks for sharing this. In light of the MHRA's 8 June letter on results using capillary blood sample collection kits, we are not able to pursue this at the moment. As with all ideas on the platform we are keeping a record of what people have posted in case it is helpful to make future contact.
