Plastic free swabs

by Esther Youd | Jun 11, 2020 | in Greener testing

Swabs and the receptacle are made of plastic. Hundreds of thousands of swabs are used every day and all this single use plastic is sent for incineration, adding noxious fumes from burning plastic to the atmosphere.

Let's make swabs and their receptacles from recycled cardboard instead of plastic (like drinking straws).

If they absolutely must be made of plastic, let's reduce the amount of plastic used by making swabs shorter. Swabs are routinely around 20cm long. For most sampling ,this length is not necessary. Shortening the swab would mean a shorter receptacle and less material for single use and incineration.

How about making swabs shorter?
